Can you believe that we presented twenty three episodes before we mentioned “ballside”, our trademark doubles system?! In 1985, we published a manual called, Play Better Tennis Without Hitting the Ball. It describes a movement system that identifies where each player should position his/herself while playing doubles. Rather than playing side by side at the net, the player who is “ballside” (the player who is across the net but on the same side of the ball/hitter) should be closer to the net. His/her partner should cover the T area and taking any ball that the ballside player doesn’t play. The depth of the nonballside player would be dictated by his/her mobility to cover lobs and the opponent’s shots. This formation is based on geometry and the coverage of players in basketball, volleyball, soccer, etc. If you get a chance to watch doubles, try to identify the ballside player during the rally.
