Pre-shot rituals or routines are common in many sports. Players that shoot a free throw, hit a golf shot, kick a penalty shot or field goal, and perform a triple axle all have something in common with the server in tennis – a pre-shot routine or ritual. The idea is that you repeat the routine before both the first and second serve. This will also, quiet the mind and eliminate all of that static and disruptive thoughts going through your mind. Today, think about the components of your ritual. Saying the score, planning and visualizing your serve (see episode 39), taking a deep breath, are mandatory. Personal idiosyncrasies, such as bouncing the ball and adjusting your hat are optional. Touching one’s face or hair should probably be eliminated. Write down your pre-serve ritual and practice it over and over. Soon your aces will be routine!
