Did you ever hear the expression, if you don’t know where you are going, you may not get there? Now that we have practiced the pre-serve motion, it is time to follow the serve to the net. After contact, you should have advanced forward, without yet knowing if the serve landed in the service box. Split step just before the receiver makes contact. You may have to move diagonally for a forehand volley/half volley, backhand volley/half volley or even across the court to hit a lob volley that has passed over your partner’s head. Most players either run directly to the service line, skip the split step or split and then stay at that position and wait for the ball to arrive to them. Practice the different patterns at home. First, split and add either one of the three volleys. Next, add the serve, split and volley. Don’t forget to do your ritual when you add the serve. Lots of hard work!
