With the warm temperatures today, it seems like a good time to think about spring tennis. One of the most popular programs in the greater Mercer County area is USTA Adult League Tennis, which is organized as competitive team match play. The league is for women and men age 18 and older of all abilities and experience. Leagues are 18 and older or 40 and older at each level: 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5 and 5.0 and also 55 and 65 and older at combined levels. The format of a team match is either 1 singles match and 2 doubles match (2.5 and 5.0 level) or 2 singles matches and 3 doubles matches (3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5). Teams roster enough players to play a match and also have subs for other weeks. The teams are organized into a flight and are scheduled to play area teams from other clubs and facilities. Winners of the local division advance to districts, sectionals and finally, nationals.
Women’s teams compete on weekdays, either during the day or evening, and the men’s teams compete on Saturday and Sundays. Even though there are USTA leagues occurring currently during the indoor season, the most popular season is the spring, when matches can be played outside and courts are more plentiful. The spring season usually starts by mid April and concludes by mid June. Several of the women’s 40, 55 and 65 and over leagues start at the end of June.
The first step is to decide what your NTRP level is so that you can find a team. For NTRP Guidelines, click here. Also, if you aren’t sure and need help, ask your teaching pro or drop into a drill and he/she will identify your level. Next, leave your name, contact information (including email address) and your NTRP level at the PRC front desk. PRC has over 50 USTA teams that participate throughout the year. We will help you find a team. Teams will be organized between now and early April.
The captain’s meeting for the Women’s 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 will be held at Princeton Racquet Club on Monday, January 30th at 7:00 pm. The captain’s meeting for the Women’s 4.0 and 4.5 and all Men’s teams will be held on February 9th at 6:30 pm at the Marriott Forrestal Hotel on College Road in Plainsboro. New rules and procedures for the upcoming season will be discussed. If you have any questions, contact Cos or Judy.
